Hi everyone! So, the idea behind this is to learn more about the songs we’ve been hearing for years. Music has always been a big part of my relationship with God, I just haven’t spent the time to really look into the hymns I’ve been hearing for as long as I can remember. My hope with this is that everyone can pick one of their favorite hymns and learn more about it and share it with everyone. Maybe one person’s favorite would be one of the favorites of someone else and we can all learn more about the hymns. Some ideas of the information that can be found on a hymn would be background on the writer or composer, if there’s a direct verse from the bible that relates to the hymn, or if there’s more meaning to the hymn that you’ve found in your research. For my favorite hymn, I chose Blessed Assurance . The reason I chose this as my favorite hymn is because ever since I was a little girl, I remember singing this song with my grandmother as we were doing anything from gardening to cooking in the kitchen. Blessed Assurance was written by Fanny J. Crosby and composed by Phoebe Knapp in 1873. Fanny Crosby is one of the most published hymn writers with over 9,000 hymns. Although she was born healthy in 1820, she was blinded after a treatment for an illness went wrong when she was two months old. She was raised by her grandmother after her father died so her mother could work and support the family. Crosby was very close friends with Phoebe Knapp who was a composer. When Knapp played Crosby a tune and asked her what she heard from the tune, Crosby replied, “It says, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.” It’s said that the rest of the hymn just came to them after that. Although there are no direct verses from the Bible that correlate to the hymn, there are a lot of verses in the Bible that could be related back to the hymn. Hebrews 10:22 says, “Therefore, let’s draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” I hope everyone enjoys learning more about some of the hymns that have had an impact on our lives. I know I’m really looking forward to reading more about everyone’s favorite hymns. Best of luck!
Hi everyone! I hope you are all having a good summer. I know that I’ve had an interesting start to my summer. I’m in Richmond this summer taking summer classes. On top of having some family issues, my car had a leak in the water pump. I’m really grateful that I was able to make it back to Richmond before I had a big issue. The 7-hour drive back to Richmond was definitely one place I’ve seen God this summer. There are still some family issues that I’m dealing with, but I know that God will be there with everyone involved. I pray that everyone has a great start to their summer and has been able to see God at work in their lives! I can’t wait to hear from everyone on how their summer has been going.
