Listen to God

When Ian first came to the Pace Center during their senior year at VCU, they didn’t expect to find a community that would nurture both their friendships and their faith. “I would meet people who were cooking and we’d share food. Having a place to go and see familiar faces every day helped me to form some deep and important friendships and work on my social anxiety.”

As those connections deepened, Ian also began attending communion. “Communion was a place where I could consistently meet with others and talk about God. It gave me the space to grow in my religious identity.” A student-led silent retreat also left a lasting impression. “It was a pretty new experience for me. I realized how often I turn to distractions. Now I allow more space to listen to God.”

Ian started organic conversations at Pace that stretched their worldview. “I think Pace provides a space with different perspectives and a wide diversity of thought because people from all religions come here.” Through it all, they grew personally. “I had many exploratory conversations with other students. At times we disagreed, but I think that was helpful, because everyone has to learn to adjust to conflict and grow. I don't think there was ever a time where people left a conversation and they hadn’t gotten anything out of it. There aren’t a lot of places like this on VCU’s campus.”

Today, Ian works at First Presbyterian Church in children’s ministry, a role they found through a Pace connection. “I’ve never worked with children before. It’s been a rewarding and challenging adjustment. I love hearing kids’ interpret bible passages like Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath and the creation story.” They also serve as a residential aide in a group home, supporting people through rehabilitation and recovery. The foundation Ian built at Pace continues to guide their work and calling. Looking forward, Ian is considering seminary. “I’m considering chaplaincy or social work because I really enjoy showing up for people and giving people space to voice their struggles.”

Thanks to your generous support, students like Ian have the space to grow spiritually and prepare to serve their community in meaningful ways.
