Just for fun

Bailey has always been someone who thrives in creative expression. Now a senior studying music education at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), she plays multiple instruments, including guitar, ukulele, and piano.
Before discovering the Pace Center, Bailey was part of another faith-based organization at VCU where she didn’t feel like all were welcome. “It just didn’t align with what I believed in,” said Bailey, “and I felt uncomfortable there.” That organization had been her primary social space. Bailey hadn’t met anyone in the large lecture halls that hosted her gen-ed classes, and without a supportive community, she struggled. “I was feeling really lonely and isolated,” Bailey confided. “At that time, I had no confidence at all.”
Determined to find an inclusive and affirming space, Bailey searched for Methodist groups on VCU’s activity board. “I grew up Methodist,” she said, “but I was only going to try a new organization if they made it clear they were inclusive.” Her search led her to the Pace Center. “I was like - cool. I’m going to give this a chance.”
From her first event, Stories and Lunch, she sensed a difference. “Everyone was invited to share their pronouns when introducing themselves,” Bailey recalled. “I had never been to a faith-based event where that was the expectation. I could tell Pace was a very intentional space.” Bailey kept returning and soon began coordinating music for Pace’s student-led worship service. “I love having a casual place to do music stuff. It’s not for a grade or critique - it’s just for fun!”
Worship at Pace was more than just a music outlet; it became a place of belonging. Each gathering began with wellness checks, reinforcing a culture of care. “The check-ins set a caring intention.” She also learned to appreciate the different strengths people brought - some with infectious energy, others with a quiet ability to unite people.
What started as a search for community turned into a journey of self-discovery. At Pace, Bailey found not just acceptance but a space to grow. She learned to embrace her strengths and build confidence. Your support helps students like Bailey find their voice at Pace. Thank you!
